Taste the Forest: An Immersive Wild Infusion & Fermentation Workshop with Sean from Rowen Forest
Thursday, July 30h, 6.30-8.30pm
Weina’s home studio in NE Portland
(address will be emailed to you once you sign up)
I’m so excited to bring Sean from Rowen Forest to teach for my community. Bring the unique flavors of our native plants into your daily routine. We are gathering at my educational habitat garden and home studio for an intimate, hands-on workshop focused on the art of wild tea crafting and traditional leaf fermentation.
Sean will be using PNW plants such as Douglas Fir, Fireweed, Nettle, and Alder. He will teach you how to bruise, oxidize and start a fermentation with mostly native plants that participants could bring home and it would be ready in around five days.
You will go beyond the field guide and explore the distinct flavor profiles, aromas, and medicinal qualities of our bioregional palette.
No prior experience is necessary.
What We Will Do
Sustainable Harvesting: Learn the ethics and practical methods of gathering from the land
The Art of Fermentation: Begin the physical technique of rolling fresh leaves to break down cell walls and guide them through a traditional wild fermentation process—the secret to turning wild green leaves into rich, complex, oolong-style teas. Plant materials will be provided
Wild Tea Tasting: Taste our way through the landscape. We will brew and compare several distinct small-batch infusions, including deeply oxidized alder and fermented fireweed, alongside the bright, bright notes of fresh conifer spring tips.
Processing & Crafting: Walk away with the foundational skills, processing knowledge, and a starter toolkit (including cotton processing bags and cheesecloth) to begin safely foraging, rolling, and processing your own wild tea blends at home.
Workshop fee covers:
• All supplies/materials including a print out of tips, resources on gardening with native plants and a list of local native nurseries
• It is a premium experience—you are getting a full wild tea tasting flight of several distinct infusions, a hands-on leaf-rolling lesson,
• You will leave with a starter kit (native wild plant leaves and a cotton fermentation bag) so you can start the fermentation process at home
• Snacks & beverage provided (bring your own cup or mug)
Here’s the workshop timeline:
Land acknowledgment
Introduction
Brief talk about native plants & tea-making
NO REFUND FOR CANCELLATION 7 DAYS BEFORE THE WORKSHOP DATE (STORE CREDIT ONLY).
